Prof. Dr. Wendy Hui Kyong Chun (Simon Fraser University, Canada)
„Authenticating Figures: Algorithms and the New Politics of Recognition“

im Rahmen von: Verleihung der Preise für wissenschaftliche Abschlussarbeiten des Forschungsverbundes der Universität Wien „Gender and Agency“ 2019.

What does recognition mean in an era of pervasive data capture and automatic pattern detection?  Tracing the historical move from "pattern discrimination" to "pattern recognition," this talk unpacks the logic and politics of recognition at the core of systems designed to automatically identify and classify users. It also examines the gap between user interactions, captured actions and algorithmic projections in order to understand how we have become figures in a drama called "Big Data."

Wendy Hui Kyong Chun is Simon Fraser University's Canada 150 Research Chair in New Media in the School of Communication. Previously, she was Professor and Chair of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. She holds a PHD from Princeton University and is an Associate at the history of science department at Havard. She has studied both Systems Design Engineering and English Literature, which she combines and mutates in her current work on digital media.
